D'Angelo Russell apologized but feels 'sick' about Nick Young video recording

USP NBA: MIAMI HEAT AT LOS ANGELES LAKERS S BKN USA CA

A bad season in Los Angeles got since a video of a conversation Russell captured with Nick Young surfaced, according to multiple published reports.

LOS ANGELES -- Nick Young and D’Angelo Russelldidn’t say much new information when they separately spoke to the media ahead of the Lakers-Heat game on Wednesday night to comment on a video recording that seemed to show Young admitting infidelity.
Young spoke first for a brief 30 seconds, saying that he believes “it’s best if me and D’Angelo handle the situation we have in a private matter outside the media.”
Russell walked in next and started by stating that he feels “sick.”
“I wish I could make things better right away, but I can’t,” Russell said.

The rookie then said he has spoken to Young about the video and that he takes full responsibility.
“I’ve reached out to him, talked a little bit. I let him know my apologies,” Russell said. “I don’t know if they were accepted. I wouldn’t blame him.” When speaking of their friendship, Russell spoke in the past tense.

Trump makes another controversial statement that probably won't derail his campaign

Donald Trump just told America that he thinks women who have illegal abortions should face "some sort of punishment." The comment, during Wednesday's taping of an MSNBC town hall, drew immediate blowback from the Democratic presidential candidates and the head of Planned Parenthood. "Shameful," Bernie Sanderstweeted. Even March for Life said the GOP front-runner had managed to upset anti-abortion advocates. Son Donald Trump Jr. pointed out, the statement *was* about illegal abortions. The outrage prompted the campaign to backtrack and clarify with a later statement: "The doctor or any other person performing this illegal act upon a woman would be held legally responsible, not the woman. The woman is a victim in this case."

Today's Batman and Superman are screen heroes with superbods

Today's Batman and Superman are screen heroes with superbods

Whether you think Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is a hot, jumbled mess or worthy of one of the greatest opening weekends in movie history, there’s one thing we can all agree on: the two main superheroes got, like, ripped.
Ben Affleck bulked up bigger than any on-screen Batman yet, while the already-buff Henry Cavill got even more muscular for his second turn as Superman.
“This isn’t the Adam West Days. You can’t just roll out of bed and put the suit on,” Affleck said during a red-carpet premier for the film. “Audiences expect you to look like a superhero. And that took me about a year of training to do.”
From West’s Batman to Affleck’s version of the Dark Knight, and from George Reeve’s 1950s portrayal of Superman to Cavil’s Man of Steel today, every on-screen iteration of both heroes seems to get bigger and brawnier.
Here’s a look at how Batman and Superman have bulked up over the years:

According to Muscle & Fitness, Cavill bulked up to about 190 pounds for his Superman debut in 2013's Man of Steel, cutting down to about 6% body fat. Before filming the shirtless scenes, Cavil pushed his body fat to 3-4%

Before stepping into Christopher Reeves’ red boots for this revival of the original Superman series, Brandon Routh wasn’t big on lifting weights.  “When you’re new to it, your body really can put on a lot more muscle easier the first time,” Routh told Men’s Fitness. He said that he “put on 20 to 25 pounds in about five to six months.”

Filmmakers behind the classic Superman series first thought Christopher Reeve was “too young and maybe even too skinny” for the role, according to one documentary. Reeve recalled wearing a giant shetland sweater to his audition to hide his “string bean” physique. After landing the role, he hit the weights and ate four times a day, mixing a meat-heavy diet with vitamin pills.
In this TV series, Reeves’ barrel-chested Superman displayed a classic physique that seems almost quaint by today’s superhero standards. But even he had help, using a padded suit that augmented his size, according to Den of Geek.

At 43, Ben Affleck is the oldest actor to debut as Batman. He’s also the biggest. He points to daily 6 a.m. workouts and the do-or-die pressure that comes with donning the iconic cowl. “I knew the camera was going to be looking at me, and the guillotine was there so I knew I had to be ready,” said Affleck, who claimed he gained 20 pounds of muscle for the role.
When cast as Batman, Christian Bale weighed 130 pounds, thanks to a previous role as an insomniac, Today notes. It took him six months to pack on 100 pounds before his debut in 2005’s Batman Begins, which ended up being too much muscle for director Christopher Nolan.
“(I was) eating, just eating like crazy, just trying to put on pounds and pounds and pounds,” Bale told Sci-Fi Wire. "I actually went … way overboard. By the time I arrived in England, you know, Chris kind of looked at me in shock and kind of went, 'God, you're like some grizzly bear.'”
In sequels to Tim Burton's Batman movies, both of these actors inherited the rubber-muscled Batsuits made famous by Michael Keaton. And while both filled them out just fine, we just remember one thing: the nipples. Their Batsuits had nipples. Why?
Tim Burton’s modernization of Batman for the big screen debuted a suit with rubberized muscles, requiring little of the wearer's physique. Keaton had played mostly comedic roles before Batman, and didn’t bulk up much, if at all, for the role. Action hero Sylvester Stallone later lamented Keaton’s Batsuit, which he said ushered in a new era. “The action movies changed radically when it became possible to Velcroyour muscles on,” he told the Los Angeles Times.
Laugh all you want at West’s goofy take on Batman. But at 6 feet 2 and 210 pounds, West’s physique was the closest to that of Batman’s in the comic books, according toan analysis by the Economist. And while his spandex Batsuit wasn’t the most flattering, West didn’t look too shabby underneath.

1,000 locked devices in limbo after FBI quits iPhone case

1,000 locked devices in limbo after FBI quits iPhone case

The legal fight pitting the Obama administration against Apple ended unexpectedly after the FBI said it used a mysterious method without Apple's help to hack into a California mass shooter's iPhone

EPA USA APPLE PRIVACY POLICY CLJ JUDICIARY (SYSTEM OF JUSTICE) USA NY

SAN FRANCISCO – The government’s surprise decision to withdraw its case against Apple over the San Bernardino killer's iPhone  adds uncertainty to criminal cases where state and local authorities have been confronted with more than 1,000 locked smartphones and other devices, blocking access to potential evidence, according to a survey of more than a dozen jurisdictions.
These locked devices are separate from the most high profile one: the iPhone used by Syed Farook, who with his wife, Tashfeen Malik, carried out the December mass shooting in San Bernardino that left 14 dead. In mid February, a California court had ordered Apple to aid the FBI in sidestepping the security function of that iPhone, an action resisted by Apple out of concerns creating new software would make all iPhones more vulnerable.

Monday afternoon the FBI announced it had been able to unlock the iPhone without Apple’s aid and did not need to move forward with its case. Magistrate Judge Sheri Pym vacated her Feb. 16 order on Tuesday afternoon.
Left unanswered is what Justice’s abandoned legal action means for the many other law enforcement agencies seeking assistance in unlocking encrypted iPhones, iPads and encrypted devices from other manufacturers.
“We were hoping this decision, which could have gone to the Supreme Court, would have been a road map and now it’s not,” said Stewart Baker, a partner in the Washington office of Steptoe & Johnson.
State and local investigators have been blocked from accessing the contents of the more than 1,000 devices because of their inability to bypass security functions similar to those encountered by the FBI in the San Bernardino case. Some of the local cases have been resolved even though possible evidence on the locked devices remained out of investigators' reach.
The data, gathered in part from queries by Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance, indicate one of the largest number of locked phones seized in connection with criminal investigations has been amassed in New York. Vance has accumulated more than 200 blocked devices while the New York Police Department estimated that there are an additional “hundreds’’ in its possession.
Officials expect the number of cases in which law enforcement seeks to force Apple to assist it overriding its devices' built-in security to increase.
In Manhattan alone, Vance’s office says the number of criminal investigations where it has been unable to get data from Apple devices has risen to 205, out of a total 734 Apple devices received by the cyber lab for this borough of New York City between Oct. 2014 and Feb. 2016.
Vance told Congress last month he expects the number of cases in his office to rise dramatically because 94% of Apple devices feature the iOS 8 operating system or higher. Other local prosecutors face similar challenges, he testified.
“The overwhelming majority of criminal investigations stalled by default device encryption will remain so until Congress intervenes,” Vance said in a statement Tuesday.
In a statement on Monday, Apple said it would “continue to help law enforcement with their investigations, as we have done all along, and we will continue to increase the security of our products as the threats and attacks on our data become more frequent and more sophisticated.”

GTY PATTY DUKE GETS STAR ON WALK OF FAME ACE USA CA

Patty Duke’s talent may have felt like a miraculous gift, but it did not come free.
An Oscar winner and TV star by 16, Duke, who died Tuesday at the age of 69, seemed to represent every happy teenage show business dream come true. But as she revealed in her powerful, beautifully written 1987 memoir Call Me Anna — a reclamation of her real name (Anna Pearce) that had been taken away by her agents — Duke was suffering from bipolar disorder, a condition that roiled her private life and almost ruined her career. That it didn't, ultimately, stands as a lasting testament to her skills, her resilience and her dedication.

Though her career as a child actress began on TV in the early 1950s, Duke found lasting fame playing Helen Keller in The Miracle Worker — first on Broadway, and then in that Oscar-winning role on film. In one of those turns long careers can take, she would remake the movie for TV in 1979, winning an Emmy playing Anne Sullivan to Melissa Gilbert’s Helen
The success of the original film led to her own ABC series in 1963, The Patty Duke Show, with Duke playing “identical cousins” Patty and Cathy. (Don't ask: It made sense to some of us at the time.) The series ran only three seasons, a victim of changing times and Duke’s increasingly troubled behavior. But it left behind one of TV’s most memorable theme songs, a song Duke ruefully (but not bitterly) said was continually sung to her by strangers who spotted her on the street or in an airport.
The Patty Duke Show made her a household name and, briefly, a teenage recording star. Her own big-screen vehicle, Billie, followed — until her singing and acting careers were jeopardized by a performance as Neely O'Hara in the camp classic Valley of the Dolls that remains memorable, for all the wrong reasons.
What saved her was TV and My Sweet Charlie, a 1970 TV movie that won her the first of three Emmys and reminded people of the actress they had first come to know. Playing a young, pregnant Southern girl who bonds with an African-American man on the run, Duke seemed to tap into all the pain she’d been hiding under Cathy’s sweet English accent and Patty’s fondness for hot dogs and rock 'n' roll.

Trump, Cruz and Kasich take back vow to support Republican nominee

Trump, Cruz and Kasich take back vow to support Republican nominee

Republican presidential candidate, Donald Trump participates
Republican presidential candidate, Donald Trump participates in a CNN town

hall with Anderson Cooper in the historic Riverside Theatre

It turns out loyalty oaths were made to broken.
All three remaining Republican presidential contenders retracted their pledges to support whomever becomes the eventual Republican nominee during a CNN town hall Tuesday.
This was obviously a rude awakening for those who imagined Donald Trump would quietly accept the GOP handing the party's nomination to someone else.
The Republican front-runner told CNN's Anderson Cooper he no longer promises to support a non-Trump nominee.
"Do you continue to pledge to support whoever the Republican nominee is?" Cooper asked.
"No, I don't anymore," Trump replied.
Back in September the mercurial mogul signed a pledge promising to back the eventual Republican nominee, even if it wasn't someone he sees in the mirror every morning.
At the time Trump said, "I have no intention of changing my mind," and "I see no circumstances under which I would tear up that pledge."

That position has now, um, evolved and Trump's new view is that his support is conditional on who ends up being the eventual nominee.
"I'll see who it is," Trump said. "I'm not looking to hurt anybody. I love the Republican party."
Trump explained he was rescinding his vow because he feels he has been "treated very unfairly" by "the RNC, the Republican party, the establishment."
The billionaire businessman said a lot of people would be upset if he was deprived of the nomination.
"When somebody goes in and wins the election and gets less delegates than the guy that lost, I don't think that's right," he added.
Ted Cruz was quite clear that he would not support Trump for president. "I'm not in the habit of supporting someone who attacks my wife and my family," Cruz said. "I think nominating Donald Trump would be an absolute trainwreck. I think it would hand the general election to Hillary Clinton."
John Kasich said he wants to "see how this thing finishes out" before promising to back anyone. Kasich said he still hopes his campaign, "the little engine that can," keeps going and he becomes the one the other candidates rally to support.
"Frankly, all of us shouldn't have even answered that question," Kasich said of the loyalty oath. "I've got to see what happens. If the nominee is somebody that I think is really hurting the country, and dividing the country, I can't stand behind him."

Turkey's President Erdogan visits Washington amid policy rifts

Turkey's President Erdogan visits Washington amid policy rifts

AP TURKEY JOURNALISTS ON TRIAL I TUR
When Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan comes to Washington this week, he'll open an Islamic cultural center in Lanham, Md., attend the 2016 Nuclear Security Summit and meet with Vice President Biden.
One thing he likely won't do is have a formal meeting with President Obama.
White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest told reporters Tuesday that Erdogan and Obama are expected to meet informally and "at least have a conversation." They won't meet because more than 50 world leaders are in town and Obama's time is limited, Earnest said.
But analysts detect a snub reflecting U.S. discomfort with Erdogan's crackdown on free expression in Turkish news media and political opponents.
On security matters, however, Erdogan and Obama are closer. Turkey supports a U.S.-led coalition fighting the Islamic State and backs Obama's call for new leadership in Syria to end the five-year civil war.
Erdogan was to arrive Tuesday evening and hopes to meet with Obama at some point during his visit, said Fatih Oke, spokesman for the Turkish Embassy in Washington.
Earnest said Monday that Obama and Erdogan met several times in recent months, including at the Paris climate summit in November, and both leaders will attend the nuclear security summit Thursday and Friday.
"We've got a lot of important business with the Turks to do, and we've made important progress through that diplomacy," Earnest said.
Erdogan, who has pushed his majority Muslim nation away from its traditionally secular culture to a more religious one, has been severely critical of the West. After the Paris terrorist attacks in November, Erdogan called European leaders hypocrites for not taking a stronger stand against anti-Muslim hate speech and attacks on mosques. He also has called for the West to do more to help Turkey deal with millions of refugees from Syria's civil war.

Zika Q&A: What Americans don't know about Zika is a lot

Zika Q&A: What Americans don't know about Zika is a lot

The mosquito-borne Zika virus, linked to an epidemic of birth defects in Brazil, is spreading quickly throughout Latin American and the Caribbean. New research provides growing evidence the virus is behind the birth defects, but many Americans remain misinformed about the disease's symptoms and risks despite heavy news coverage.
Recent research indicates that, in addition to mosquitoes, Zika can be transmitted through sex and through blood transfusions. The World Health Organization declared the outbreak a "public health emergency of international concern." Here is the latest on what you need to know:
AFP 548502750 I EPL MEX GU

Q: Are Americans well informed about Zika?

A: Turns out they're not. Although Zika infections are rarely fatal, 42% of those surveyed thought people infected with the virus are "very likely" or "somewhat likely" to die, according to a survey by the Annenberg Public Policy Center. About 44% said those infected with Zika would know it because the virus always produces noticeable symptoms, according to the survey. In fact, 80% of people with Zika infections display no symptoms, according to the CDC.

Q: What does the latest research show about the link to birth defects?

A: Health officials say a study of 88 pregnant women in Brazil provides the strongest evidence yet that the virus causes devastating birth defects. Ultrasounds found major abnormalities in 29% of the fetuses from women who tested positive for Zika, according to the study published in The New England Journal of Medicine. The defects included microcephaly, a condition in which babies are born with unusually small heads and incomplete brain development. The fetuses from women not infected with Zika showed no abnormalities.
A separate study uncovered evidence that the Zika virus specifically targets developing brain cells, leading to stunted brain development. The findings, which eventually could identify drugs that treat the virus when it first infects, were published in the scientific journal Cell Stem Cell. The research found the virus affects neural stem cells, which develop into much of the nervous system in fetuses, slowing their growth.
Yet another study showed — for the first time — that Zika can cause Guillain-Barre syndrome, a rare condition in which the immune system attacks nerve cells and causes paralysis. The study analyzed cases of the disease that were diagnosed during a previous Zika outbreak in French Polynesia and found about 88% of Guillain-Barre patients had experienced Zika-like symptoms.
A separate study from French Polynesia shows the territory's rate of birth defects rose after a Zika virus outbreak there in 2013 and 2014.

Q: What is the U.S. doing to prepare for local cases once it warms up?

A: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will lay out battle plans against Zika in April at a one-day summit with state and local officials ahead of the virus' anticipated arrival in the USA. "This meeting will also provide an opportunity to increase knowledge of best communications practices and identify possible gaps in preparedness and response at the federal, state, and local levels," the CDC says.

Q: What is WHO doing to fight the virus?

A: The organization is asking nations around the world for $56 million to fight the Zika virus through the end of June. The agency can request additional funds to fight Zika after that. The WHO will use its $2.3 million emergency fund to finance the initial response of a major action plan it released.

Q: What is the USA doing to fight the virus?

A: President Obama asked Congress for $1.8 billion in emergency funding to combat Zika through mosquito control programs, vaccine research, education and improving health care for low-income pregnant women. The proposal includes $355 million in foreign aid to South America, Central America and the Caribbean, where the virus is spreading most rapidly. Zika is not currently spreading locally in the U.S.
The directors of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) said their agencies' work is hampered by a lack of secure funding.
Republicans in Congress say the USA should use up $3 billion in leftover funds allocated for Ebola before spending more on Zika.

Q: What are outside organizations doing?

A: The World Bank offered $150 million to fight the Zika outbreak and provide medical care. The institution said more funds could be made available if needed in the future.

Q: What about this theory that pesticides are linked to the birth defects?

A: Experts debunked a theory that linked pesticides to an increase in birth defects thought to be caused by the mosquito-borne Zika virus in Brazil. The theory gained traction among social media users after Argentine environmentalists issued a report linking the surge to pyriproxyfen, a chemical that kills mosquito larvae. Brazil's Ministry of Health rejected any link between the chemical and the microcephaly outbreak, noting the World Health Organization deems pyriproxyfen safe for use as a pesticide. Scientists called out the report for providing no evidence to back up the claims.
